Production & job cost · Charlotte · Raleigh · Upstate SC

Every PBI house moves from underground to final. The data should show where it waits.

You're hiring an IT BI Developer to turn job-costing and scheduling data into decisions your construction directors and area managers can act on. Here is the kind of report that role would own, built the way our team would build it.

Pick a market, a builder, a quarter or a division below and every number on the page recalculates.

Public facts used: PBI was founded in 1977 by Bob Price, is led by CEO Matthew Price, and reported 380+ employees in a 2022 company press release. Role title and salary range are from PBI's IT BI Developer job posting. Every operating figure on this page is invented for illustration.

Production & Job Cost

One report page for the weekly production meeting: how many houses closed out, what they earned, what came back, and where homes are stacking up in the pipe.

The phase run: where homes sit right now

Homes in progress at the end of Q3, by phase. Line weight shows volume; the valve marks the phase running furthest over its standard.

House cross-section showing the plumbing phase pipeline A pipe run climbs through a two-story house section from underground, through rough-in and top-out, to trim and final. Line weight shows homes in progress at each phase; a valve marks the bottleneck phase. SECTION A-A · PLUMBING PHASE RUN NOT TO SCALE · SAMPLE DATA TAP

What the sample is saying

Each read pairs what is working with where the next hour of attention should go. Figures below cover every market, builder and division for Q1–Q3.

How we'd staff this

A report like this becomes part of how the week runs, so it can't depend on one person being in the office. We put a lead developer on the build, a project manager who also develops in Power BI and knows the model as well as the lead does, and principal oversight from me. If someone is on vacation or out sick, the work keeps moving.

The coverage model

  1. Lead developer owns the semantic model, the DAX and the refresh pipeline.
  2. Backup PM who builds runs the weekly show-and-tell, keeps the backlog, and can pick up any report mid-sprint.
  3. Principal oversight reviews design decisions and stays accountable for the outcome.

Power BI is what we'd deliver. If some field leads don't carry Power BI licenses, the same views can also be published as a light custom web page.

One hire or a team

The posting lists $85,000–$110,000 a year for an in-office IT BI Developer in Charlotte. That is a sound hire. Many of our clients make that hire and bring us in alongside: we stand up the model and the first reports, and their analyst owns them day to day with a team behind them.

One hire
BICS team (or alongside your hire)
PTO and turnover
Reports wait while the analyst is out. A resignation restarts recruiting and ramp-up.
Brandon knows the model as well as Jonathon does, so work continues through vacations and changes.
First dashboard
Comes after recruiting, onboarding and learning where the job-costing and scheduling data lives.
Starts from patterns we have built before, with a weekly show-and-tell from the first sprint.
Breadth
One person's strengths, usually deep in one or two of Power BI, SQL, Power Automate, Python and Azure.
All five covered across the team, with about 15 developers to draw on when a need comes up.
Knowledge if someone leaves
Lives mostly with the person who built it.
Documented model, two people who know it, and principal oversight that stays constant.

We would scope the work with you before anything starts, and it can shrink as your own hire takes more on.

Walk through this with your data in mind

Thirty minutes is enough to see which of these views would matter most to your directors of construction and area managers, and what it would take to build them on your own job-costing and scheduling data.
